Found Pets
Halifax Humane Society partners with Petco Love Lost to help reunite lost pets with their families by using picture-based matching technology. All pets that enter the animal shelter are photographed and listed on Petco Love Lost. You can review found animals, report a lost or found pet, and register your pet if they ever go missing.
As soon as you find a pet:
- Report the pet as found on Petco Love Lost, where animal shelters and neighbors post lost pets.
- Check for a collar or tags: If the collar or tag has a phone number, try calling and texting the number.
- Check for a microchip: If safe, have the animal scanned at a local veterinary clinic, any Volusia County Fire Station, or the Halifax Humane Society during business hours. Once you have a microchip number, you can look up the pet’s registered information at PetMicrochipLookup.org or by calling 1-866-597-2424 and try to contact the owner.
- Go for a walk: Be mindful of safety and physical distancing, take found dogs for a walk on a leash in the neighborhood where they were found. Talk to the neighbors to see if anyone knows the dog, and be on the lookout for any gates left open the pet may have escaped from.
- Social Media: Post a clear picture and location where the animal was found on local social media pages. Facebook, Nextdoor, community platforms, and email lists are great places to start. Post in the Lost and Found sections, and make sure nobody has posted on the “lost” section an animal matching the one you found.
If the animal appears sick, injured, or aggressive, please get in touch with your local animal control authority:
