Dogs Day Out

Dogs Day Out

Overview of the Dogs Day Out Program

The Dogs Day Out program is part of the Open Paw “Real Life Experiences” Level IV training.  By exposing shelter pets to real-world experiences – like car rides, trips to the beach or a busy shopping center, or even special treats like Pup Cups at Starbucks – we give them opportunities for socialization, exercise, and exposure to new and normal environments outside the shelter walls. This initiative helps alleviate stress and boredom, making the dogs more adoptable and further engages the community in our lifesaving mission.

How It Works

Volunteer Recruitment: The shelter recruits volunteers interested in spending time with dogs outside the shelter. Interested individuals typically go through an application process that may include a brief orientation.

Dog Selection: Shelter staff assess the dogs available for the program, prioritizing those who would benefit most from a day out. This includes dogs that are anxious, have been in the shelter for an extended period, or need socialization.

Planning the Day: Volunteers are provided with guidelines on how to plan the outing, including activities like hiking, visiting parks, or enjoying a day at the beach. The shelter will provide supplies like leashes, harnesses, and water bowls.

Safety and Well-Being: Volunteers receive training on safety protocols, including handling dogs in different environments and recognizing signs of stress or discomfort. They are encouraged to monitor the dog’s behavior throughout the outing.

Community Engagement: During the outing, volunteers often take photos and share their experiences on social media, helping to promote the dogs and increase their visibility for adoption. This also encourages community members to engage with our overall lifesaving mission.

Return to Shelter: After the outing, volunteers return the dogs to the shelter, where staff can assess their behavior and well-being following the experience. Feedback is gathered to improve future outings.

Benefits of the Program

Enhanced Quality of Life: Dogs experience mental stimulation and physical exercise, which reduces stress and improves their overall behavior.

Increased Adoptability: Dogs participating in outings are often more socialized and better prepared for home life, making them more appealing to potential adopters.

Community Awareness: The program raises awareness about the shelter’s mission and promotes the importance of adoption and responsible pet ownership.
