Spay & Neuter Clinic

Redinger Spay & Neuter Clinic

Here at Halifax Humane Society, we’re big advocates for spaying female pets and neutering male pets. In addition to preventing unwanted litters, altering your pet before maturity (at 4–6 months old or before a female’s first heat cycle) offers the best protection against serious health issues and the development of negative behaviors.

Each year, our skilled veterinarians, with more than 200 years of combined veterinary experience, perform more than 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries for owned pets at the Redinger Spay and Neuter Clinic and shelter pets at our Lohman Pet Adoption Center.

Pet Eligibility

Pet Age: 3 months to 8 years with a healthy veterinary exam. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is required for pets 5 to 8 years old (requires an additional $49 fee)

Pet Weight: 3 to 120 pounds

A Longer, Healthier Life for Your Pet

Why Spay?

Spaying helps prevent serious medical conditions in your female cats and dogs, such as uterine infections, uterine/ovarian cancer, and breast cancer.

It’s also far less expensive than treating an infection, having an emergency C-section, treating cancer, or raising a litter of puppies or kittens.

Why Neuter?

Neutering helps prevent serious medical conditions in your male cats and dogs, such as testicular cancer.

It also often has a positive effect on your pet’s behavior!

Neutering makes your pet less likely to mark his territory or spray urine throughout the house, and it tends to make your pet less aggressive and less likely to roam.

Solving Pet Overpopulation

Spaying and neutering is the key to solving the pet overpopulation problem in our community. Just ten years ago, the Halifax Humane Society took in more than 15,000 homeless dogs and cats yearly, most of which were euthanized. By reducing the number of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens through affordable sterilization programs, we have reduced homeless animal intake to less than 6,000 animals a year, and more than 90% of those dogs and cats are being placed into new homes!

How We Do It

High-Efficiency Model: High Quality, High Volume Spay-Neuter Clinics (HQHV) operate on the principle that increased patient volume reduces the cost per pet, passing along the cost savings to pet owners. To boost surgical patient volume, it is essential to maintain a strict focus on only providing spaying and neutering services. Every animal receives a pre-surgical examination, species, age-appropriate medications, and exacting surgical procedures according to the Association of Shelter Veterinarian standards. We emphasize caring for healthy pets with rigorous safety protocols, ensuring the best care possible for your dogs and cats.

Expense Reduction: We only maintain the essential tools and equipment for our focused animal sterilization services. This approach means we do not stock items required to treat more complex medical conditions or surgical procedures. As a clinic expands its services, expenses increase, raising client costs.

Publicly Supported Charity (Non-Profit): As a publicly supported charity, we rely on donations to keep our prices low and subsidize services when needed. Contributions from the public, foundations, and caring corporations help cover part of our expenses, ensuring that high costs do not burden our clients. This donated support enables us to serve community members who cannot afford care for their pets otherwise.
