Before You Find Your Pet a New Home
Before you decide to relinquish ownership of your pet to the Halifax Humane Society, there are resources we can provide to help you keep your pet. If you need assistance providing food, training to address a specific behavior (like barking or jumping over a fence), paying an unexpected pet deposit, or even help accessing veterinary care for your pet, we can assist you. Please call our admissions department at (386) 274-4703, option 3, between 10 am and 6 pm daily. You may also email admissions@halifaxhumanesociety.org for help.
Self-Service Option
The only guaranteed way for your pet to find a new home is if you adopt them to a new family yourself. We work with and recommend Rehome, a partnership between Adopt a Pet and PetSmart, to help you place your pet with a new family. Visit their website to get started: https://rehome.adoptapet.com/.
Relinquish Your Pet to Halifax Humane Society
We are an open-admission shelter and will assist you regardless of your pet’s age, health, behavior, or reason for surrender. To balance our resources, animals are admitted by appointment. Our service area is Volusia County. If you live outside this area, you must seek help from your local animal shelter.
To make an appointment to surrender an animal, please call our admissions department at (386) 274-4703, option 3, between 10 am and 6 pm daily. You may also email admissions@halifaxhumanesociety.org to schedule an appointment. Please complete a dog or cat intake profile before arrival at the animal shelter.
On average, we invest $848 to care for each animal we receive. We charge a surrender fee of $35 per single animal or $150 for a litter of puppies or kittens to help cover our costs. The cost to surrender a pet without an appointment is $100.
