AFFORDABLE, COMPASSIONATE, & LIFESAVING CARE

At Halifax Humane Society, we are dedicated to making spaying and neutering for dogs and cats accessible to all pet owners. Sterilizing your pet before maturity (around 4–6 months old or before a female’s first heat cycle) helps prevent unwanted litters, protects against serious health risks, and reduces negative behaviors — all while helping pets live a longer, healthier life.

Every year, our veterinarians perform more than 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries for owned pets and shelter animals. Our team has received specialized training through the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance Veterinarian Training Program, and every procedure follows the best practice guidelines of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) — ensuring the highest standards of safety and care.

PET ELIGIBILITY

  • Pet Age: 3 months to 8 years with a healthy veterinary exam
  • Pet Weight: 3 to 120 pounds

WHY SPAY OR NEUTER

Benefits for Female Pets (Spay)

  • Prevents uterine infections, ovarian/uterine cancer, and breast cancer
  • Eliminates the risk of costly emergency procedures
  • Avoid the challenges of unwanted litters

Benefits for Male Pets (Neuter)

  • Prevents testicular cancer
  • Reduces roaming, marking, and aggression
  • Helps improve household harmony

Spaying and neutering isn’t just good for your pet — it’s lifesaving for our community.

HELPING SOLVING PET OVERPOPULATION

Ten years ago, Halifax Humane Society sheltered over 15,000 homeless pets each year — many of whom faced euthanasia due to overcrowding.

Thanks to community support and affordable sterilization programs, the intake of pets has dropped to fewer than 6,000 annually, and approximately 90% of those animals find loving new homes.

Every pet spayed or neutered makes a difference. Together, we can end the cycle of overpopulation.
